My name is Sharon, and I am the mother of second grader Mateo. I hope you and your families are all doing well during this continuing coronavirus pandemic. I am reaching out to all of you because I am running for a seat on the Community Education Council for District 3.
I came to New York City for college and never left. I fell in love with city life - arts & culture, concerts happening anywhere and everywhere, and especially the people - the city that never sleeps was absolutely the place for me. I was a first generation college student, and attended Manhattan College undergrad and Columbia University for graduate school. My husband David and I met at an Orientation BBQ @ Columbia - 2 vegetarians met at a BBQ! Devoting my life to education, I have been featured in Chalkbeat's "How I Teach" series on the best American educators, I presented at the virtual Critical Issues in Mathematics Education Conference last April, I was a panelist at the Education Writers' Association Autumn 2020 virtual seminar "Going Test-Optional: A Pandemic Response, or a Pilot Program?", and I delivered a TEDx style talk in December entitled "101 Days" at Math for America's MT^2 Event.

The educational issues I am most passionate about include progressive and project-based education, STEAM opportunities, dual language programs, thoughtful technological integration and mentoring first generation college students. I live with my husband David and two children Alexi and Mateo in Washington Heights. Currently, I am the recording secretary for the Community Education Council in District 6 in Upper Manhattan, and this position has given me many insights into public education across New York City and several opportunities to stand up for parents, families and communities.

This Saturday, April 10th, a candidate forum for CEC3 will be held virtually. This is an opportunity to get to know the parents running to represent District 3. I will be speaking at this April 10th event. Here is the link to register for Saturday's virtual event:

I know all of us have incredibly busy schedules, so here is the link to watch the recorded candidate forums at a later time:

Elections for Community Education Councils across NYC will take place May 1st - May 11th. Please feel free to email me anytime. I welcome the opportunity to represent the SMS community on a districtwide level, and to advocate for all NYC school children.

"No matter what our particular job, especially in our world today, we are all called to be repairers of creation. Thank you for whatever you do, wherever you are to bring joy and light and hope and faith and pardon and love to your neighbor and to yourself....everybody longs to be loved and longs to know that he or she is loveable, and consequently the greatest thing that we can do is help somebody know that they are loved and capable of loving." - Fred Rogers
