Lisa’s Weekly Notes

September 1, 2017

Hello SMS families! Enjoy those end of summer barbeques and dips in the pool or summer surf–it’s almost time to get back to school. Please see the attached September calendars for you planning. Please note, there are TWO separate calendars: one for Elementary/Middle School and one for High School. Also note that MS and HS have delayed start times on the first day of school. Middle schoolers report to school at 9:00 am, and high schoolers report to school at 10:00 am on September 7.

Check out the Chalkbeat article on the 3rd-8th grade state test scores–SMS is at the top of the list!

Huge congratulations go out to SMS Kindergarten teacher, Stephanie Cherubin, on the birth of her son, Casper Alexander Antonelli-Cherubin! We are so happy for her, and we can’t wait to meet baby Casper!

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or information you would like me to share with the larger community. For those of you who are new to SMS, my office is in the high school, but I am also at the Elem/MS every day. You can reach me via phone at 917-441-3692, extension 2, via email at, or you can make an appointment to speak with me in person.

Benjamin Rubie (9th grade):  In July Ben played at Moore’s Lounge in Jersey City alongside celebrated jazz violinist Regina Carter (picture on right), and played with a select group of students at the Litchfield Jazz Festival in Connecticut in early August.  He will also appear in an episode of Amazon’s Season 4 of Mozart in Jungle.

Melissa Mosley (5th grade) participated in Music Fest Perugia where she performed Haydn’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op 19 with their orchestra and attended master classes with piano greats like Jerome Lowenthal, among others.
